I was born and bred in Auckland City, New Zealand, and now live
in England. I first got into the dance scene at age 16, listening
to the dance music my brother brought home and lovin it. This facination
with the 4 by 4 bass beat grew and I was introduced to the Brain
parties, underage dance parties run by NZ promoter/ DJ Sample
Gee. Here 'Hardcore' held the dance floor and everyone got off on
the ruff fast breakbeats coming out of the Netherlands and England.
It was during this time that I got a mix tape of Carl Cox and fell
in love with his style behind the turntables.
After secondary school, I headed over to England for a year, working
in a boarding school in Somerset, England. The area wasn't much
of anything, but England introduced me to the emerging house music
sound and DJ's like Tall Paul, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Judge
Jules, Sasha as well as many others who have shaped my mixing styles
and the music I play today.
Returning to New Zealand I become a regular patron of the local
underground, spending many a nite at 'The Box'. The Box was Aucklands
home of Techno, Resident DJ's Dean Web and Greg Churchill playing
the latest Detroit sounds every weekend for all to hear. During
this time I was also began attending the club nites at 'The Staircase',
which I later went on to Dj at.
I first began
DJing in June 1996 using a few cheap records and my friends
turntables. I used to grab every opportunity to go over to his house
and play on his Technics 1200's. As both our skill's increase we
started doing friends parties and endlessly talked of our entry
into the club scene. After about a year I bought all my own gear
and started spending even more hours on the turntables. I also started
to get into a bit of scratching, although I'd need to spend a lot
more time on practising before I get really good.
1998 saw my first set in a club, 'Kiss Bar', which was followed
up by several one off's in clubs around the central city and a residency
at 'The Kase'. The experiences gained taught me that the best nites
are always when you least expect it and when you play well the hours
just disappear.
I'm now living in London, and only recently started to get back into the DJing
after a year off travelling, although I'm currently spending
a lot more time on the dancefloor than behind the turntables, as I've still got to go buy some! But all that should be sorted by the middle of feb 2002.
The record boxes I left back in NZ are filled with many different
styles of dance music, Techno, House Uplifting, Trance, Hardhouse,
Garage etc. , as my preferences are always changing. 2001/2002 sees
me into my Uplifting Trance and Progressive House, tending towards
DJ's such as DJ Teisto, Paul Van Dyk and Matt Hardwick.
